Research conducted using samples from 56 different locations in Turkey revealed that the Yığılca bee differs from bee populations in other provinces in terms of body size and organ length. Subsequent extensive research also demonstrated the genetic and morphological distinctiveness of the Yığılca bee ecotype.
The Yığılca ecotype, which has entered the literature, is characterized by high honey yield, industriousness, winter hardiness, and excellent adaptation to its region. It offers hope for future breeding and selection efforts in Turkish beekeeping.
Research in the district revealed that beekeepers do not purchase queen bees from outside, maintaining the continuity of colonies passed down from ancestors for 20-30 years. For many years, pure, continuous breeding within the community has been practiced without migration from outside. Therefore, due to geographical isolation, an ecotype adapted to its environment and flora has developed in Yığılca. Chestnut, rhododendron, and flower honey produced in Yığılca district is available at sales points throughout the province.
