How to Get There: The Genoese Castle is located 2.5 kilometers from the center of Akçakoca district. It can be reached by public transportation within the city.
The Genoese Castle is located 2.5 kilometers west of Akçakoca district in Düzce, on a cliff between two bays. To the south of the castle, a tall tower stands in the middle of the walls, running east and west, and there is a water cistern in the inner courtyard. The bricks and mortar used in the castle are similar to those used in other Genoese castles.
The Genoese Castle and its surroundings, dating from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Eastern Roman periods to the present day, have been registered as an archaeological and natural site by the Ankara Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Board and have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List under the name "Castles and Walled Settlements from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea on the Genoese Trade Route".
The Genoese Castle, with its high elevation above sea level and its location directly on the sea, is one of the rare centers in the region that offers a combination of history and natural aesthetics. It has two separate Blue Flag beaches to its east and west. One of the beaches, named Yalıyarlar, is notable for being known as a seal reef due to the caves it contains along its coastline.
