How to get there: Yukarı Mahalle 81650 Akçakoca/DÜZCE
Akçakoca district and its villages boast beautiful examples of civil architecture. These structures exhibit diverse architectural features depending on their construction period and the origins of their inhabitants. A large portion of these historical houses are located in Yukarı Mahalle, one of Akçakoca's oldest settlements and famous for its unique style. 160 historical houses have been designated as a protected site. Resembling an open-air museum, some of these historical houses, examples of civil architecture, have been restored.
These houses, dating back approximately 150 to 200 years, fall into three groups. The first type consists of single-story, rectangular houses with spacious kitchens and narrow rooms. The second type has a nearly square rectangular plan and is two-story. They feature numerous but narrow windows. They are constructed on stone foundations using a wooden frame and Baghdad-style construction. The ground floor of the exterior is plastered, while the upper floor is clad in wood. They have large wooden verandas. The third type, more recently constructed, has larger windows and lower ceiling heights. The houses have wooden floors and ceilings, while their exteriors are plastered.
